It is possible that mythological Griffins (half-eagle half-lion) of ancient tales may have been based on the protoceratops. Their unusual fossils with the large frills and bird-like beak may have inspired the imaginations..
Male protocerotops had frills that were more elaborate. This was possibly to attract females.
Some scientists believe that protoceratops tunneled, and lived underground. This is because their fossils are often found in an upright position, showing that they might have been in tunnels when they died.
The large eyes of the protocerotops is suggested as evidence of a nocturnal lifestyle.
Their jaws were packed with teeth suited to chew tough vegetation.
This is how big it might have looked like, if it stood beside a human.
